2016 April Fools Prank

Pokemon Go took the world by storm when it was released in July 2016. What started as an innocent April Fool’s prank became one of the most downloaded apps. Making over $4,000,000 on its first day, it was an overnight success. Niantic, the company responsible for creating the app, struck gold.

Pokemon in real-life! Everyone couldn’t believe what they were witnessing. Pokemon has millions of fans worldwide, and their dreams are coming true. Unfortunately, that’s all you can say was good about it. Naturally, problems arose for the small California company. 

Pokemon started as a Video Game.

Pokémon started as a video game for the Gameboy that came out in 1996. In Pokémon, you go on an adventure to find animals called Pokémon in the wild, capture them, and train them to fight other Pokémon. The game was wildly successful, selling 59.52 million copies with the first generation of games alone (Wikia, Pokémon). Its popularity spawned a very successful video game series with 24 games in the main series and 15 spinoffs, a trading card game that started in 1996 and is still going strong today, and an anime series that is currently airing its 19th season. On July 6th, 2016, Pokémon Go was released for iPhone and Android devices. Pokémon Go uses GPS and augmented reality and allows people to go outside and catch Pokémon in the real world, something that many kids growing up with the Pokémon series have dreamed about since the original game was released in 1996.

 

Partnered with Google

On April 1st, 2014, Nintendo partnered with Google to create a parody of introducing Google’s newly made job title, Pokemon Master.

The video showed clips of people using their phone cameras to search for and capture these unique creatures called Pokemon. The video was a huge hit. Millions loved the concept, and Nintendo realized they had something with the potential to be significant. Nintendo didn’t want anytime, and development for the game soon commenced. On July 6th, 2016, Pokemon Go was released. 

The gameplay consisted of traveling to real-life hot spots for a chance to find wild Pokemon to capture. Hotspots would include parks, restaurants, and even historical monuments. Players could help each other and search for their favorite Pokemon. 

Launch Day

Pokemon Go’s first day was a phenomenon. Millions of people were playing together in person to find these rare Pokemon. It was nothing anyone had ever seen before. Pokemon Go became the main topic on almost every news station on television. You couldn’t go shopping without seeing a group of people playing the game in public. 

Parks were overfilled with hundreds of people running around. Traffic jams sprouted all over the country because players swarmed the streets to chase after these mythical creatures. Even the big cities weren’t safe from the Pokemon craze. The game soon found praise from all parts of the world. Unfortunately, the praise didn’t last for long.

Weeks went by without any updates from Niantic. Complete silence. Fans became unruly. They discussed among themselves the technical issues that plagued the game. Many problems went unresolved. For example, the system that determined how physically close you were to a Pokemon didn’t function correctly. Hence, why third-party apps were created to help remedy this issue but were later shut down by Niantic. This resulted in players being outraged.

To add more to this disappointment, Niantic hosted a Pokemon Go festival that attracted thousands of fans worldwide, and it was a disaster. People booed whoever was on stage and sang chants like “Fix the Game!” drowning out anyone who dared try to talk over them. 

Accidents and Deaths

When over 100 million people have downloaded your game, there are bound to be accidents. Pokemon Go has been the cause of over 100,000 motor vehicle crashes since its inception. Distracted drivers would play Pokemon Go as they drove to reach hotspots, only to end up in an accident. Some countries like Kuwait banned Pokemon Go. Players have been arrested, injured, and killed playing this game. There was a case in Asia where a girl was hit & killed by a distracted driver playing Pokemon Go. 

People were becoming understandably annoyed with all the trouble being caused by this game. It interfered with their lives, and there was no sign of slowing down. Players were getting caught trespassing onto properties. Others became the victims of muggings. Police all over the country were urging people to not play while driving. Even Niantic promoted safe playing. The first incident even being reported just hours after the game was released. 

This once beloved game was now becoming despised by everyone.

The Positives of Pokemon Go

Despite all the criticism it received, Pokemon Go was very attractive. It encouraged more people to exercise and begin walking daily. If you wanted to level up in Pokemon Go, you had to travel physically, the fact that it didn’t promote sedentary behavior was good. With many players going outside, communities began thriving, and hotspots were an ideal place to socialize with other players.

It wasn’t just health but business too. There was an increase in sales from the rise of Pokemon Go. For example, with players spending hours at parks and other landmarks, nearby businesses began seeing increases in foot traffic. Restaurants also thrived. Vendors populated these hotspots to sell all kinds of small conveniences like phone chargers and chairs too!

People did not have any idea how long Pokemon Go would last. Some believed it had the potential to stay for years, while others thought of it as just a fad. In a way, they were both correct.

Updates

The game was still riddled with bugs and exploits that ruined experiences. For example, technical issues that have populated the game since launch were still big issues that were ignored. But, Niantic later began pushing out much-needed updates and new content. For example, content included player vs. player combat, trading, and the addition of more Pokemon’s. 

Still Alive and Kicking

Pokémon Go has over 5 million active users and an estimated 800 million downloads! 

It is currently 2019, and Pokemon Go is still going strong. It has seen a resurgence in popularity over the years. The game has fixed many of its core issues. Pokemon Go will go down in history, demonstrating what intriguing effects a social-heavy game can have on the real world. 

Anything that can influence millions of people to gather together in harmony could reveal truths about the intricacies of human behavior. Who’s to say something like this could happen again but on a much larger scale? Nobody expected Pokemon Go to be such a huge success, including Nintendo.
