Google Trends is one way to check what everyone is talking about online or the biggest news.

To our generation, the ability to follow trends can be essential. Sometimes not being able to follow trends can isolate us from the rest of the world. Knowing the trends allows people to be not outdated. Also, it allows people to be aware of the things that are going around in the world. So we need a way to keep up with that need, and platforms like social media can feed that need. Another way is using a trend platform like Google Trends to keep up with the current happenings. They have different sorts of categories for trends like business, sports, and more. These trends are live trends that get updated right away, so it is the newest of information.

What are Google Trends?Google Trends

A search engine company called Google Inc. created Google Trends software to show recent events. It was launched on May 11th, 2006. Then, on August 5th, 2008, a similar program called Google Insights for Search was found. Subsequently, a few years later, on September 27th, 2012, Google merged Insight, now known as Google Trends. Google Trend is a public web facility for Google. According to Google Inc, it has real-time updates on trends that happen in the world. It gives the users a fresh update on the current events that are happening around the world. They have their way of processing the data from the most important trend to the least important. They use a five-word search to piece together to find the breaking story. In addition, they also use a graph that searches for hot topics.

Google Trends has many categories like business, sports, health, and more. Along with that, it has features to view what is trending in other countries as well. What’s so great about Google Trend is that it has current trends but has trended from the past. This allows users to know the recent events that are happening around the world. This eliminates the use of watching the news and waiting for it to come up. Also, Google trends have features that show data that is relevant to us. For example, mother’s day is coming up soon, this weekend, when I am writing this paper. So Google trends go the extra step to show what is better for their mother, a brunch or flowers.

The Purpose of Google Trends

According to searchenginewatch.com, there are many different purposes for Google Trends. One of the primary purposes is that people can see how interests are spiking/changing. There are four ways you can search on google trends: web search, worldwide, time, and categories. These parameters can be edited so that people can be specific about what they’re looking for. An example of this would be if someone from a company wanted to check their interest in a product. They could search the product name and see how the interest in that product is doing. The claim could be spiking or going down, and the company would be able to know. The company could then change things about the product and see how it affects the interest. They can also compare the product’s attraction with their sales and see how they can affect both.

Google Trends can also use public figures who want to know how announcements they’ve made have affected their interest. An example of this would be that Ariana Grande and Mac Miller broke up yesterday. As of last night at 8 PM, the interest in those names sparked too much higher than usual. If they broke up to spark interest and get their names in the news, which is common in Hollywood, they could use Google Trends to check and see how much they sparked. Then they could match that with their sales and see how much they spiked. There are many other instances that this could be used in and is used in. These examples were to demonstrate the purpose of Google Trends.

Type of Trends on Google Trends

Based on trends.google.com, as discussed in the previous paragraph, Google Trends has four main parameters. These four parameters are web search, location, time, and individual categories. The web search is a search bar at the top of Google Trends to type whatever you want. It will then show your interest in that search term and how it changes. The location helps you narrow your search to certain places, like countries or states. You can also put certain countries, showing you the most popular things in that country. This can be used to see what important things are happening in other countries.

The following parameter is time. This will show you the most popular searches over a specific time interval. It can also show you at a particular time. You can use this by going to Top Charts and checking by year. You will be delivered the most popular searches from many categories from that year. The final parameter is categories. This is just a tab you can click on that will show a bunch of categories. If you click on these categories, it will show you what things in those categories are spiking. For example, if you go to categories and click on the business, you will see the most popular/trending stories. Currently, the most popular story in the US is about a Boston Dynamics robot. These are the main types of trends on Google Trends.

How are the trends found?

There are a lot of different types of trends that are on Google trends. It has a lot of various categories and other ways that they represent these data. They use graphs, tables, and more to present the data they collect. According to ‘whatis.techtarget.com,’ Google gets its trend by using its search engine to see how much it was searched. What they do is they take five words that were searched the most by the search engine and piece them together. Which allows them to see which stories they are trying to look for out of the recent ones. For example, Mexico’s national football team, ‪Rafael Márquez, ‪the 2018 FIFA World Cup, ‪Juan Carlos Osorio, and ‪Javier Hernández was searched most often in the last three hours. When these five words are pieced together, it comes out to the Mexican soccer team roster release.

Another way that they find the trends is by using the traffic on other websites. According to ‘searchenginewatch.com,’ this allows them to create columns like “Also visited” and “Also searched for.” What they do is, instead of looking at the traffic on that specific word, they look at the related terms. This divides the data into percentages of visitors from a particular geographical region, and a crucial feature is how the data is presented on maps. This is called “Geo-Targeting.” For example, it has data on the Trump administration and which countries are interested in them. This data is also presented by states as well and some counties as well. They show a descriptive and in-depth analysis of the trends geographically.
